Sarasota Residents Invited to Help Choose New Public Art for Newtown

A new public art project in Sarasota’s historic Newtown neighborhood is moving into its public feedback stage. The city is asking residents to review five finalist mural designs for Amaryllis Park Place, an affordable senior housing community, and share their opinions through an online survey open through June 7.

The mural will be placed on the Orange Avenue façade of the development, making it more than a decorative feature. It will become part of the visual identity of the neighborhood and the daily experience of residents, pedestrians and drivers passing through the area.

Public art can be especially meaningful when it is tied to housing, history and neighborhood pride. Newtown has a rich cultural legacy, and projects like this can either honor that legacy or miss the mark. That is why public participation matters.

The city’s Public Art Program is working with the Sarasota Housing Authority on the project, and the current survey gives the community a direct voice in which design moves forward. It is a small civic action, but one with lasting visibility.
