The 2025 Sarasota Music Festival opened in early June with a performance that felt both intimate and historic. Music Director Jeffrey Kahane shared the stage with his son, composer and singer-songwriter Gabriel Kahane, in a program that blended classical mastery with contemporary composition — a fitting reflection of Sarasota’s evolving cultural identity.

Held at the Sarasota Opera House and other venues across the city, the festival once again drew nationally recognized musicians and emerging artists for its annual three-week residency. Known for pairing education with performance, the festival brings dozens of young fellows to Sarasota each summer to study alongside world-class faculty members.

This year’s father–son collaboration became an emotional highlight. Gabriel Kahane performed selections that bridged classical structure with modern lyrical storytelling, while Jeffrey Kahane conducted and performed, creating a rare multigenerational musical dialogue on stage.

Audience response was enthusiastic, reinforcing Sarasota’s reputation as Florida’s Cultural Coast. Local restaurants and downtown businesses reported strong traffic during opening weekend, underscoring the festival’s economic impact as well as its artistic significance.

Now in its sixth decade, the Sarasota Music Festival continues to serve as both a cultural anchor and a seasonal driver of tourism. Organizers expect attendance to remain strong throughout June, with chamber performances, orchestral evenings, and educational events scheduled through the end of the month.
