Proposed Property-Tax Overhaul Could Cost Sarasota County Millions
A proposed state property-tax change backed by Gov. Ron DeSantis could have major budget implications for Sarasota and neighboring counties. Suncoast Searchlight reported that the proposal could cost Sarasota, Manatee and DeSoto counties an estimated $380 million over two years. For Sarasota County alone, the projected two-year impact was reported at about $140 million.
The proposal would increase the homestead exemption from $50,000 to $150,000 in the first year and to $250,000 in the second year. Supporters say the move would provide meaningful tax relief to homeowners. Local-government concerns center on how counties, school districts and public services would absorb the revenue loss.

This is a story with direct local consequences. Property taxes help fund county services, schools, public safety, infrastructure and other core functions. If the plan advances, Sarasota residents should expect a larger debate over what gets cut, what gets replaced by other revenue and who benefits most from the change.
