Downtown U.S. Garage Site Remains Flashpoint in Preservation Debate

The future of the

continues to stir debate as preservation advocates challenge the process behind redevelopment plans. The Sarasota Alliance for Historic Preservation has argued that the city bypassed public review before allowing demolition to move forward, while the city relied on a prior determination that the building was not historically significant.

The proposed redevelopment, known as Adagio, would bring two downtown towers to the assembled site: an 18-story condominium tower and a 10-story apartment building, with commercial space included. Separate reporting from the Observer noted the project includes 193 residences, including market-rate condos and attainable-priced rentals, and more than 31,000 square feet of commercial/retail space.

The fight is bigger than one building. It touches on historic preservation, the Live Local Act, downtown density, housing affordability and how much public review residents should expect when major redevelopment reshapes the city center.
